In Russia, Beth is told with some wonder, they pay people to pay chess. As to the chess, it is, of course, a compressed version of the game; there is a passage in the book where Beth takes an hour to make a move, sitting with eyes closed, and there is no way to represent it onscreen that won't have viewers leaving the room to cook dinner or buy a car or whatever. With her wide-set eyes and triangular face, Taylor-Joy has something appropriately alien in her mien, in the Area 51 sense, but she manages to integrate the otherworldly lack of affect we associate with intensely focused people — as represented on TV and in the movies anyway — with recognizable human warmth; she is a likably self-involved character. The odd number there is telling. Both shows carry the same level of emotional gravity, and The Queen’s Gambit steps up as a dramatic and suspenseful and, yes, unexpectedly intense show. Sacrifices must be made, and tragedy and trauma prevail during moments, but it’s ultimately an invigorating and thrilling story. Chess is a musical with music by Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus of the pop group ABBA, lyrics by Ulvaeus and Tim Rice, and a book by Rice. The story involves a politically driven, Cold War–era chess tournament between two grandmasters, one American and the other Soviet Russian, and their fight over a woman who manages one and falls in love with the other.

Third, and perhaps most important, it's about chess as chess; there is something almost audacious in making a series in which the main dramatic action involves two people at a table, moving little carved pieces of wood around, punching a clock and taking notes. If that wasn’t promising enough, consider that The Queen’s Gambit novel, which was published in 1983, was committed to the page by Walter Tevis, who also happened to pen 1959’s The Hustler novel, which led to the 1961 movie (starring Paul Newman) of the same name.

Seven is weird, but it’s spot-on for this story.

As a chess player, seeking help of what is the comments for his (GM Ben FineGold) attitude. She does that a great deal over the course of the season, but somehow, she’s utterly riveting during every onscreen moment. You never thought chess could be steamy, right? Johnston, reserved and determined, is believably possessed by the game and good at it. The pieces on this show's board move toward a hopeful, collaborative endgame — which isn't quite convincing in our current moment but is welcome nonetheless. She’s adopted by a fellow lost soul, a 1950s housewife played by Marielle Heller with tragic alcoholism on the side but genuine love and respect at the center of the relationship. The show resists labels, and furthermore, this is Taylor-Joy’s vehicle, and she commands it, but there are other actor-ly attractions on display.

The Soviets' national chess strategy is a stark contrast to Beth's individual interiority. Instead, the series presents Beth's isolation as a weakness that she needs to overcome and Soviet bureaucratic book chess as a skill she needs to assimilate. It’s tempting to say that Beth is aided in her journey by multiple influential players in her life. https://www.reddit.com/r/chess/comments/gpu6zf/cr1tikals_chess_drama_video While key to the story, it is somewhat less convincing onscreen than the chess, because addiction is harder to play than concentration, or easier to overplay, and perhaps because it is something we have seen often in the talking pictures.

Placed in an orphanage, she discovers the janitor playing chess in the basement and under his reluctant — and later, astounded — tutelage, reveals herself to be a prodigy.

Plenty of debate exists about whether chess should be classified as a sport. That singular goal comes at the expense of relationships and relaxing downtime that most people covet and cherish. (I would watch that cough, though, Mrs. W.), Throughout Beth will battle, or give in to, alcohol and drugs — a recurring theme in Tevis' fiction and life — beginning with the tranquilizers she's fed at the orphanage, a kind of junior "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" situation.

If you're looking for a light, easy watch that's relatively drama-free and focused on romance, Love is All is an adorable historical romcom. It would be easy for the series to present Russia's collectivist approach as unfair or unsporting, in comparison with a purer American self-reliance. Trey Songz Is Bringing Love ‘Back Home’ To R&B, Blackstarkids Are Ready To Take Charge On ‘Whatever, Man’, On ‘The L.I.B.R.A.,’ T.I. No more and no less than necessary, and that’s a rarity in the digital age. Well, it is, but not gratuitously so. The endgame the narrative is trying to win never developed that way, and the current high-level gambits between the U.S. and Russia have not been universally successful. But we need explanation for his emotion and for the good of the chess community family. This story originally appeared in Los Angeles Times. And she’s good, damn good. As a child, she’s stuck in a tranquilizer-fueled orphanage and finds purpose and drive from chess when an orderly (Bill Camp) recognizes her budding genius. After she is adopted by Alma Wheatley (Marielle Heller), Beth begins to enter tournaments and becomes nationally and internationally famous for her intuitive play and blazing attacks. Now that the Cold War is over and we're facing somewhat different problems, even the tentative superpower reconciliation presented in "Queen's Gambit" feels a little like a solution to someone else's chess problem — elegant, pleasing, but not precisely relevant.

Nobody is murdered, except metaphorically, in tournament play or physically assaulted or even sexually harassed, which is a little surprising, given the premise, and refreshing among lurid shenanigans that make up so much contemporary television. Spread chess love … Tevis was also the author of the pool novel "The Hustler," its sequel, "The Color of Money," and the sci-fi parable "The Man Who Fell to Earth." What’s truly sobering is that The Queen’s Gambit has been destined for adaptation for over a decade, including a version meant to star Ellen Page and Heath Ledger. It follows the usual narrative, in which a precocious, mercurial U.S. individualist challenges the bureaucratic Soviet Union hive mind. It’s always 8, 10, or 12 episodes on streaming, you know? Viewed across the chessboard, Russia isn't an implacable rival, but a worthy opponent and a country where the game Beth loves is loved as it should be. Somehow, as well, this chess-drama is a lot more interesting than it has any right to be. Or you can consider this a meditation upon addiction and danger. ZHU ZI material living outside expert 'melon old' coaching, the use of good chess, not only to save the mother, but also ready to leave Beijing, the emperor to sue them, toppled the dynasty's power rape. Look at me, mentioning a karate-focused franchise in the same breath as one that revolves around a strategy-focused board game. Beth Harmon lives and dies by the fall of the pawns (and rooks and queens) on her opponents’ boards. She's a cold, isolated genius who does her best chess preparation alone in bed, imagining a chess board on the ceiling, moving the pieces with her mind through infinite combinations until she finds that path to victory. More than any of those labels, however, The Queen’s Gambit zeroes in on what it costs to become a champion.

Other hands will help her along the way, most notably fellow orphan Jolene (Moses Ingram), a voice of experience and proportion, and U.S. champion Benny Watts (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), flamboyantly unconventional in a cowboy hat and duster with a knife strapped to his belt. Two of the American opponents she defeats offer to help train her. Anya Taylor-Joy as Beth Harmon in "The Queen's Gambit" on Netflix. Everyone here — Scott Frank, the screenwriters, the costume and set designers, and (obviously) the talent — is on their game, quite like (and at the service of) Beth. It is also, in screen terms, something like a cross between "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" — a lovingly decorated period piece, stretching from the late 1950s through most of the '60s, concerning a young woman triumphing in what was then considered a man's game — and "A Beautiful Mind," as an attempt to concretely represent the workings of an unusual intelligence living way out in the abstract.

Little doubt existed, for anyone who’s watched Taylor-Joy in The Witch, Split, or any of her rapidly accumulating credits, that she’s got presence, but The Queen’s Gambit makes exquisite and methodical use of her talents. The relationship with one's opponent across the chessboard is rivalry, but it's also a kind of love. Her victories eventually gain her entry to competitions in Paris and Moscow, though alcoholism threatens to derail her career.

But "Queen's Gambit" is bracingly uninterested in boilerplate anti-Communism.

Their speed-chess scene is a standout one. By the same token, the show refuses to denounce the Soviets' collective tactics. Among them are Harry Melling’s Harry and, most delightfully, Thomas Brodie-Sangster as Benny, whose costumed affectations come closest to matching up to Beth’s eccentricities. Status: Completed. Teammates go over games together — with state support. In part because of her miserable experiences in the home, Beth refuses to denounce Marxist atheism at the behest of her charitable benefactors. As fictional chess prodigy Beth Harmon in Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit, Taylor-Joy is every bit of the powerhouse that one would expect from an actress who landed the Furiosa prequel role. Chief among those elements would be the underdog tale, which we don’t often see outside of the contact-sport context. Brodie-Sangster is possibly best known for playing Liam Neeson's little boy in "Love, Actually," and looks weirdly identical 17 years later, only stretched out tall with a wispy beard and mustache.
