Each chapter covers one subfield of psychology (e.g, developmental, cognitive) and in turn is divided into several subsections of several pages each. There was not a strong emphasis on cultural relevance. The critical thinking questions and the boxes with real life examples are great in that they reflect updated culturally relevant examples in terms of topics, current themes around the United States political, cultural (etc) climate; however, as culture and times changes, these would be easily adaptable/changeable.

In our rapidly changing culture, some current associations may not be fully accurate any longer, such as how either sex responds in certain situations.

Hopefully it can be amended. The images were accurate and pertained to the chapters. The content is accurate and for the most part unbiased. The text is mostly internally consistent. The focus is on the American population. I spent an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out where the next sentence began after the reference! This edition also includes a new feature called A World of Difference, drawing on pivotal research to show the importance of sex, gender, culture, SES, and ethnicity in understanding psychology. He died in 2013.

A specific example of this is when referencing the Muller-Lyre illusion noting the finding that cultures that utilize different housing structures that don’t use 90 degree angles are less likely to be susceptible to this illusion (carpentered world hypothesis) Or in Chapter 5 when discussing cocaine to note that some indigenous tribes chew on the leaves of the coca plant to maintain alertness.
The text relies heavily on dominant cultural perspectives and lacks emphasis on the diversity of human nature.

Text is broken down into chapters with smaller chunks labeled with subheadings. On a positive note there were no issues with cultural insensitivity either. Gerrig et al, 2010).

A table with examples of circadian rhythms throughout the day would be helpful. For example, details about the cultural determinants of personality, the role of culture in prejudices and stereotyping, the ability of researchers to generalize their investigational results to culturally diverse populations, and how the cultural context needs to be accounted for in psychological disorders would have highlighted the all important role of diversity in our discipline.

It will make it easier to sort through the material if you have multiple Chapters on an exam. For example, the “War of the Ghosts” example on page 23 is used to illustrate Bartlett’s research on the cognitive and social processes of remembering. There are 14 chapters in total giving a complete understanding of the introductory course for psychology. The consistency in this textbook is awesome. By design, this text is very modular and, although topics can build on one another, there is an intentional lack of connection between chapters. I am a developmental psychologist... I love the organization of this text. One chapter on Hormones and Behavior touches on some sex differences, but is just focused on biology. This book cover most of the topics for the introduction to Psychology course. I have seen textbooks with more chapters that may perhaps also be more comprehensive, but may also be overwhelming to get through in a traditional 16 week course. Again, in order for a textbook to be considered for adoption, it must not only be clear but also be thorough to cover all of the material needed for an introductory class.

Each chapter builds from the other, but at the same time is not reliant on the previous or next chapter.

There is a glossary for each chapter.

Reviewed in the United Kingdom on 11 August 2015, I am about to undertake a degree in Psychology and found this an easy read, well laid out with nice touches of humour to lighten the subject. For those who are curious, the unattributed author is Dr. Charles Stangor, who prefaces the textbook by stating that the focus of Introduction to Psychology is on behavior and empiricism.

The index is appropriate, but I was not able to find the glossary.

(There was one reference page though where they did not follow the APA formatting rule of italicizing the journal titles!). Several areas lack depth, which is understandable for an introductory text, but many also seem to lack cultural breadth and... Other than some minor inconsistencies in font size with printed PDF version of the text, the text is easy to navigate and features are helpful.
