I've notice that when a movie realistically exposes a side of the inner workings of manipulative people, that recognition may be walled off by anyone who shares some of those traits, and who then further escape by bringing up irrelevant aspects of the story or implying the story was something else entirely in an attempt to make the uncomfortable recognition go away, especially when they see the manipulators get their comeuppance.
