What is K&R for C Programmers, this book series by Daniel P Friedman, could be for people wanting to learn LISP. Highly recommended! In fact what this book demonstrates is the awesome power of recursion.
While probably of most interest to programmers or the mathematically inclined, the book claims to have been based off lecture notes for liberal arts students. The format is a set of questions and answers, which is initially quite an odd read. I would recommend you start with The Little Schemer and follow up with The Seasoned Schemer (the sequel to the other book). little-scheme would create a REPL.
But after I finished the first seven chapters in around 4 hours, I realized it was actually a book to teach basics of programming, in a fun way of course. I find programming books relatively valueless. If you already have some experience but would like to flesh it out a bit more, like I did, its gimmicks will get on your nerves really quickly. Or a book about some other dialect of Lisp?
