Thanks for reminding us of Herman Hesse. Or, is it about quiet Leo like service and discipline of passions and longings for a higher and greater good? He writes a long letter to Leo, explaining his need to reconnect with the League and the Journey. Leo appears in Book I not as the leader of the League, but as a quiet and contented servant to the group. This prevents automated programs from posting comments. June 13, 2015 at 11:29 AM. Members in the League begin to differ and divide on how the Ancient ways are to be interpreted, and, in time, those who were once close and united about the meaning and purpose of the League and the East part paths and go in different directions.

Hesse became in the 1960s-1970s an ikonic literary guide in North America. I had looked at some of his books a year or so ago - having read them in my hippie days, 40 years ago, while I could still read. The Journey to the East is set within the context of the 20th century in which Christian states had bullied, fought and gone to war twice---was this what Christianity was about?----wars, millions of deaths and a mindless nationalism in which brothers and sisters of the same faith viciously turned on one another because of nationality. Hesse was much too subtle a thinker and wise a spiritual guide to slip into the tendency to romanticize the East and demonize the West. But now that I've thought on the novella further--and now that a number of life developments have intervened--I now believe I was wrong in my original interpretation and mine is much closer to yours. I now accepted the hours of despair as one accepts acute physical pain; one endures it, complainingly or defiantly; one feels it swell and increase, and sometimes there is a raging or mocking curiosity as to how much further it can go, to what extent the pain can still increase.”, “The law of service.
