There aren’t many features on this album since the group is large and diverse enough to handle things themselves. “When the poor people run out of food,” snarks JID, “They can eat the rich.”. As the world we inhabit begins to look more and more apocalyptic by the day, it seems all the more urgent to find an answer as well. The use of its broad range of musical traditions ties this sentiment uniquely to America and its diversity of histories and beliefs, all woven together to form one distinctive harmony, and a new religion — one that binds us rather than divides.

But overall it reminds me a lot of IDK’s “Is He Real?” in the sense that while the songs on both projects are mostly good, the lack of follow through on the concept presented becomes the fatal flaw. “Psalmsing” is one of the better Mereba songs I’ve heard. And 6LACK has developed a high profile in the R&B scene. (Beast Coast’s album last year is a big example) The redeeming qualities aren’t hard to find though.

It’s a question that also seems to have weighed heavily on the recording for Atlanta super crew Spillage Village’s new album Spilligion. “The Never Story” and “Mirrorland” are some of the best albums to come out of the camp. Hell, it has one of Chance The Rapper’s best verses in a long time. HowardTheDuck to the Funatics in the audience. They also suggest solutions that would make any “turn the other cheek” Christian clutch their rosary a little tighter. The chorus has some of J.I.D.’s best singing I’ve ever heard and the verses, while they don’t come together into anything much, match the energy. There's a strong lack of cohesion hindering this album even in it's best musical moments. (He was hilarious in the opening skit too), As for the stars of the album themselves. The biggest reason I love “Cupid” so much is Lucky Daye’s vocals.
Big Rube’s appearances here are great too.
Songs like “Baptize” and “Cupid” have already proven to have high replay value for me. The collective consists of EarthGang, JID, Hollywood JB, Jurdan Bryant, Mereba, 6LACK & Benji. (Though to IDK’s credit, he made much more of an effort than “Spilligion” does to be consistent.
Spilligion follows and builds on Spillage Village’s Bears Like This trilogy.
Where do you turn at the end of the world? It’s a question that seems to become more pressing by the day.
